Civic Participation and Social Cohesion

“I feel like I’ve finally found my voice, and everyone, Democracy Lab or not, should have this opportunity”

Moreland Democracy Lab was recently part of a showcase of social cohesion projects at Moreland City Council.

This was a wonderful opportunity to hear from different participants of community-led initiatives which aim to build greater connection between different cultural groups in Moreland.

One of the things that struck me the most about all the presentations was that when you give community members the space and support to develop activities from the ground up, the results are not just great projects. Sure, projects create great photo opportunities, loved seeing all the happy faces and amazing food! But I sometimes wonder if once the project ends, photos taken and food eaten, whether there was anything lasting created. Listening to the participants speak showed that the outcomes are much deeper – they talk in a much more empowered way, they believe in their capacities and that they have important contributions to make.

I am really proud of what the Moreland Democracy Lab is achieving, but especially proud to be part of a group of such amazing initiatives.
